Man, 82, Shoots Wife In Head With .22 Caliber Rifle: Berks County DA

An 82-year-old Berks County man was arrested after shooting his wife in the head with a .22 caliber rifle, the Berks County District Attorney's Office said.

Howard “Philip” Boltz, of Bethel, called police to report that he had just shot his wife in their home on Airport Road at 9:10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, according to the district attorney's office.

Police found an 84-year-old woman in the residence with a gunshot wound to her head, the district attorney's office said. She was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center in stable condition.

Boltz was arrested and charged with Criminal Attempt - Homicide, Aggravated Assault, and related offenses, according to the district attorney's office. He was taken to the Central Processing Center at the Berks County Courthouse where he is awaiting arraignment.

Police from Bethel and Tulpehocken townships and the Pennsylvania State Police assisted. A joint investigation was conducted by the Bethel Township Police Department and Berks County Detectives.
